Our History

  • Did you know that we were one of the churches involved with the famous correspondence between the Danbury Baptists and President Thomas Jefferson in 1801 and 1802? Pastor Anthony Bacino from Dover First Baptist Church has done an excellent job writing about this history, particularly as it relates to the church that he pastors.
  • Click here to access the notes of the Danbury Baptist Association meeting in Colebrook, CT in October of 1801.  It was the meeting before sending President Thomas Jefferson the famous letter.  Page 4, #14 is particularly interesting in understanding what the concerns of the time were. (I WOULD ENCOURAGE YOU TO BELIEVE VERY LITTLE OF WHAT YOU READ ON OTHER WEB SITES ABOUT OUR HISTORY AND THE CORRESPONDENCE OF THE DANBURY BAPTIST ASSOCIATION WITH THOMAS JEFFERSON. Even some well-meaning people have gotten their facts wrong.  Recently I stumbled across a web site that identified the Danbury Baptists with the Commonwealth of Virginia!)
  • Did you know that at one time the famous composer, Charles Ives was our organist?
  • Did you know that you can download an early history of our church written by a former pastor? It is free of charge, and is recorded in a scanned PDF book.  It was written in 1869, and is entitled, History of the Second Baptist Church, Danbury, Connecticut. (The original name of the Baptist Church of Danbury was Second Baptist Church.)  Enjoy!
  • We hope to post more historical information as we are able.
